Parenting: Part 1…” You Cannot Pour From an Empty Cup!

Parenting Part 1: Navigating the Beautiful Chaos

This is the first episode of the 5-part miniseries, “Parenting: Navigating the Beautiful Chaos” in the Lynda: Rooted&Real podcast.

In ‘Parenting Part 1’, Lynda opens with a heartfelt reminder for weary parents: it’s essential to take care of yourself first, as you can’t give your best when you’re running on empty. She encourages you to prioritise rest, seek support when needed, and continue to be present for your children, emphasising that self-care is not just important, but vital for effective parenting.

[00:00:17.49]Welcome back to Rooted&Real.
[00:00:20.41]We’re going to do five
episodes on ‘Parenting’.
[00:00:24.25]The first one is,
‘You Cannot Pour From an Empty Cup’.
[00:00:30.41]This is for real but tired parents.
[00:00:36.61]So to every tired parent,
you can’t pour from an empty cup.
[00:00:44.25]Listen here, I
see you running on 3 hours of sleep and
[00:00:49.89]cold coffee,
and I need to tell you something.
[00:00:54.29]You cannot pour from an empty cup.
[00:00:59.25]We’ve been told that good
parents give everything.
[00:01:03.25]All your time,
all your energy, all of you.
[00:01:07.85]So what happens is that we
feel guilty for resting.
[00:01:12.01]We feel guilty for a shower alone.
[00:01:18.93]But it doesn’t have to be like that.
[00:01:23.21]We also feel guilty for just
saying, “I need 10 minutes.”
[00:01:27.57]But listen, exhaustion
isn’t a badge of honour.
[00:01:32.57]Burnout doesn’t make you
a better mom or a better dad.
[00:01:37.09]It just makes you a resentful one.
[00:01:40.81]So here’s the truth.
[00:01:43.05]Your kids don’t need a martyr.
[00:01:45.93]They need a regulated adult.
You hear me?
[00:01:50.01]A mom who slept is more
patient than a mom who didn’t.
[00:01:54.41]A dad who took a walk is more
present than a dad running on fumes.
[00:02:00.01]So taking care of you is not selfish.
[00:02:03.81]It’s just maintenance.
[00:02:06.49]It’s how you keep showing up
for them without losing yourself.
[00:02:10.89]That’s parenting.
[00:02:13.21]That’s a 20-minute nap.
That’s okay.
[00:02:17.49]That therapy appointment,
that’s also parenting.
[00:02:21.69]That “No” to one more thing,
that’s parenting too.
[00:02:27.09]So stop wasting
and stop waiting when things calm down
[00:02:34.73]to rest because you know what?
They won’t.
[00:02:37.57]Not for years.
[00:02:39.17]Ask for help.
[00:02:40.69]Tag your partner, tag your sibling,
tag your other offspring.
[00:02:45.13]Let the dishes sit.
[00:02:46.89]Let them Let them watch one
more show while you breathe.
[00:02:50.89]You are allowed to be a human first.
[00:02:54.65]So to every tired parent,
fill your cup first,
[00:03:00.21]because the best thing you can give
[00:03:02.89]your kids is you, a whole you.
[00:03:10.57]So that’s how it is.
