“Loving a Broken Person Part 4…” You Cannot Pour From an Empty Cup!

This is the fourth episode of the 5-part miniseries, “Loving a Broken Person: Embrace the Cracks, Celebrate the Soul” in the Lynda: Rooted&Real podcast.
Being the strong one can leave you carrying everyone else’s pain while ignoring your own.
In ‘Loving a Broken Person Part 4’, self-care means taking your needs seriously, even when others still need support.
Rest, honest boundaries, nourishing food, and time without demands can help you feel steady again. You can care for someone without giving away every last part of yourself.
Fill your cup first, so your love comes from strength rather than exhaustion.

[00:18.73]Hey, this is Lynda, your personal person
from Rooted&Real.
[00:26.93]So we are on the 4th episode of ‘To the
Person Loving Someone Who Is Broken’.
[00:34.85]Now, one reminder,
‘You Cannot Pour From an Empty Cup’.
[00:42.29]‘Sawa’ (okay)?
[00:46.05]When was the last time someone asked you,
“How are you really doing?” Why?
[00:53.45]You’re always the strong one.
[00:56.33]The one who holds everything together.
[00:59.57]You make sure they eat,
you make sure the kids are okay,
[01:02.57]you make sure the rent is paid.
[01:06.53]Even when he spent his share.
[01:09.25]But you, you cry in the shower
so that no one hears you.
[01:15.01]You haven’t laughed freely in months.
[01:18.49]Your friends say you look tired.
[01:21.17]‘Na wewe’ (and you)?
[01:22.09]You say, “Okay…”
[01:24.57]You’re so focused on saving that person
that you forgot you also need saving.
[01:32.25]Here’s the truth:
you cannot pour from an empty cup…
[01:37.69]You cannot keep giving love if you’re
running on emptiness and resentment.
[01:45.17]You need care too, and not later— now.
[01:52.17]That means you need
your own people, your own support system,
[02:00.17]your own therapist, your own pastor,
your own friends
[02:05.69]who won’t judge you for staying.
[02:08.33]That means you need sleep,
you need food that nourishes you,
[02:12.25]you need that walk,
that prayer, that journal.
[02:16.73]Taking care of you is not betraying them.
[02:20.49]Taking care of you
is how you make sure you don’t break
[02:24.69]while loving someone who is broken.
[02:28.05]So today, do one thing just for you.
[02:30.17]Not for them, for you,
because you matter too.
[02:37.69]Not just as their saviour, as you,
a person who also deserves love,
[02:46.25]rest, and care.
[02:50.33]So don’t disappear while trying
to keep them from disappearing.
