Dads Who Are Really Trying Part 2…” Its Okay Not to Know What You’re Doing!

Dads Who Are Really Trying Part 2: Embrace the Journey, Not the Perfection

This is the second episode of the 5-part miniseries, “Dads Who Are Really Trying: Embrace the Journey, Not the Perfection” in the Lynda: Rooted&Real podcast.

It’s completely normal for fathers to feel uncertain at times; you’re not alone in this journey.

In ‘Dads Who Are Really Trying Part 2,’ the focus is on the importance of embracing the learning process and being honest with your children. They value your authenticity far more than any illusion of perfection.

Remember, fatherhood is about growth and discovery, and it’s perfectly acceptable to acknowledge that you don’t have all the answers.

Your ongoing efforts and willingness to be genuine will resonate with your kids, fostering a deeper connection built on trust and understanding.

[00:18.73]To the dad who’s trying,
but secretly has no idea what he’s doing.
[00:27.49]It’s actually ‘Okay Not to
Know What You’re Doing’.
[00:31.21]Welcome back, and this is
Lynda with Rooted&Real.
[00:39.69]All the dads are trying to figure,
to figure it out, to figure
[00:47.49]what is it exactly they’re doing or what
is it exactly they’re supposed to do?
[00:53.45]No one gave you a manual, did they?
[00:56.81]Your father probably didn’t
teach you how to be soft.
[01:00.21]He taught you how to be strong.
[01:02.05]How to not cry, how to provide.
[01:05.53]Okay, so now you’re a father yourself,
and you’re googling.
[01:10.89]I’m ‘shrabbing’ (mispronouncing).
You’re googling in your head.
[01:15.01]How do I comfort a crying daughter?
[01:17.65]How do I talk to my teenage son?
[01:21.49]You feel like you’re supposed to have all
the answers because you see,
[01:24.77]you’re the man of the house.
[01:27.05]So when you don’t know, you go quiet,
you get angry, you walk away.
[01:33.89]Not because you don’t care,
but because you don’t know what to say.
[01:40.69]So you know what?
It’s okay to not know what you’re doing.
[01:45.65]It’s okay to say, “Son, I’ve never done
this before either, so let’s
[01:49.89]figure it out together.”
[01:52.53]It’s even okay to say,
“I’m sorry, I handled that badly.
[01:57.97]Can I try again?”
You see, that doesn’t make you weak.
[02:01.85]It makes you real.
[02:03.65]And you know what?
[02:05.41]It makes you safe.
[02:09.37]Your kids don’t need a perfect
dad who never makes mistakes.
[02:12.13]They need an honest dad
who keeps trying after he makes them.
[02:18.97]What am I saying?
[02:20.49]You’re allowed to learn as you go.
[02:22.73]You’re allowed to ask for help,
to watch a video, to ask your wife, “How
[02:27.57]do I do this better?” So the best dads
are not the ones who know everything.
[02:33.53]They’re the ones who never stop
learning how to love their kids better.
[02:39.89]And you know who that is?
[02:42.29]That is you.
