“When Overwhelmed Part 3…” You Don’t Have to Fix Everything Today!

This is the third episode of the 5-part miniseries, “When Overwhelmed: Rest. Breathe. Your Story Continues.” in the Lynda: Rooted&Real podcast.
In ‘When Overwhelmed Part 3,’, rest begins with noticing when your mind treats every worry as urgent. Write down what needs attention tomorrow, even if it’s only a few plain words. The list can hold those tasks while you eat, wash up, or get ready for bed. Then take a slow breath and let tonight be for rest, not solving every problem.
You don’t have to fix everything today.

[00:17.73]Welcome back.
This is Lynda on Rooted&Real.
[00:23.33]We’re doing a series on being overwhelmed.
[00:28.81]And today, I just want
to tell you one thing.
[00:31.49]‘You Don’t Have to Fix Everything Today.’
You don’t have to fix everything tonight.
[00:38.65]So to you who is trying to solve your
whole entire life,
[00:44.41]how to make more money, how to fix that
relationship, how to heal your family, how
[00:51.01]to become the person you dream of being.
[00:53.37]And your brain is spinning and spinning,
and you feel more and more anxious.
[01:03.61]Okay, listen to me.
[01:06.33]You don’t have to fix
your whole life today.
[01:08.41]You don’t have to fix
your whole life tonight.
[01:12.41]Tonight or today is not for solving.
[01:18.01]It’s for resting.
[01:20.25]Your brain is treating every worry like
it’s an emergency
[01:24.49]that must be solved right now.
[01:28.17]But it’s not.
[01:29.85]Most of those things
cannot be solved at 2 AM.
[01:34.37]They need daylight, they need rest,
they need a clearer you.
[01:39.57]Let’s do what I
also want to call the tomorrow-list.
[01:45.85]Get your phone, open
notes, ‘umeskia’ (are you listening)?
[01:51.25]And we’re going to do this together.
[01:54.77]So write at the top, “I will think
[02:02.61]about this tomorrow at 10 AM, not now.”
[02:08.41]And dump it all.
[02:10.05]Everything that is carrying
you right now, write it badly.
[02:13.81]No grammar needed.
[02:14.63]Just dump it out of your head and
onto the paper.
[02:18.69]“Bills tomorrow, 10 AM.
[02:20.57]That conversation, tomorrow, 10 AM.
[02:23.01]My future, tomorrow, 10 AM.” Then you tell
your brain,
[02:28.01]“Thank you for trying to protect me.
[02:31.45]And we’re safe right now.
[02:33.81]We are in bed.
[02:35.13]We are breathing.
[02:37.09]The only job tonight is to rest.”
Because I keep saying this,
[02:43.97]you cannot pour from an empty cup
and you cannot think clearly
[02:49.29]from an exhausted brain.
[02:51.65]So rest.
[02:52.33]We’re not procrastinating,
whatever that thing is called.
[02:57.17]We are getting a clearer mind to do things
a little better and a little easier.
[03:06.37]Productivity today is not
answering emails.
[03:11.45]Productivity today is drinking water,
it’s breathing deeply, letting
[03:15.73]your shoulders drop, sleeping.
[03:18.69]You’re not running away
from your problems.
[03:21.93]You’re preparing yourself to face them
with a stronger you.
[03:26.37]Close those tabs.
[03:29.25]The world will wait.
Just rest.
[03:32.09]Okay?
[03:34.61]Tomorrow, let’s talk about
why you’re not a burden.
[03:39.85]But about being overwhelmed today,
please take that rest.
[03:46.33]Remember, got this, and I got you.
