“When Overwhelmed Part 1…” You’re Not Lazy. You’re Overwhelmed!

This is the first episode of the 5-part miniseries, “When Overwhelmed: Rest. Breathe. Your Story Continues.” in the Lynda: Rooted&Real podcast.
In ‘When Overwhelmed Part 1,’ Lynda explains that mental overload can make simple tasks feel impossible, especially when your mind is holding work, messages, worries, and small decisions at once.
That heavy feeling doesn’t mean you’re lazy; it means your attention needs care and a pause. Put both feet on the floor, loosen your jaw, and take three slow breaths before choosing one task.
Make it small enough to finish in ten minutes, such as replying to one email, washing one plate, or opening the document you need.
When it’s done, stop for a moment and notice the progress before deciding what comes next.

[00:17.93]Hi, this is Rooted&Real,
and this is Lynda,
[00:23.13]your personal person speaking.
[00:27.13]Today, I’m going to talk about something
that is very close to my heart.
[00:35.85]The series is ‘When You Feel Overwhelmed’.
[00:43.21]So today, I’m going to
start with the first one.
[00:45.57]‘You’re not lazy.
[00:48.01]You’re just overwhelmed’. You’re Not Lazy. You’re Overwhelmed!
[00:51.73]So, for you who woke up today and you’re
feeling tired,
[00:57.49]you look at your to-do list and you just
froze: dishes,
[01:04.57]messages you haven’t replied to, work
that you need to catch up on,
[01:12.33]but you’re just there,
you can’t do anything.
[01:16.69]So you start asking yourself,
“I’m so lazy.
[01:19.97]What’s wrong with me?” I need to say this.
[01:26.81]You’re not lazy.
[01:29.09]You’re just overwhelmed.
[01:31.13]There’s a totally big difference.
[01:34.01]You see, a lazy person doesn’t
feel guilty about resting.
[01:38.05]And a lazy person
doesn’t want to do these things.
[01:41.85]They don’t care.
[01:43.73]But you, you care so
much about it it hurts.
[01:48.81]You want to do it all.
[01:52.69]But you just don’t have the energy
because your brain is not just
[01:58.49]thinking about those dishes.
[02:00.85]Your brain is like carrying 50
tabs open, all of them at once.
[02:05.77]“One, how will I pay that bill?
[02:08.57]Two, why was I blue-ticked?”
[02:12.69]‘Ghai’ (God), that one is depressing.
[02:15.57]“Three, am I a bad parent?
[02:19.17]Am I a bad sibling?
[02:21.93]Am I a bad friend?
[02:25.69]Am I a bad wife?”
Four, you think about that embarrassing
[02:31.97]thing that happened even 3 years ago.
[02:35.25]Five, you ask yourself,
“What if my future never works out?”
[02:43.81]You’re exhausted.
Anyone would be.
[02:46.85]And You don’t have a discipline problem.
[02:50.53]You have an overload problem.
[02:54.25]And you will not heal by shouting
at yourself to do just one more.
[03:00.61]But you will heal by
closing one tab at a time.
[03:04.85]So today, we’re not doing everything.
[03:06.93]We’re doing one small, brief thing.
[03:09.57]Not clean the whole house, just one plate.
[03:14.17]Not fix your whole life.
[03:16.21]Just drink one glass of water.
[03:18.69]Step outside for like 5 minutes.
Feel the sun.
[03:22.73]Take one deep breath that goes
all the way to your stomach.
[03:28.41]That is not small.
[03:31.33]When you’re overwhelmed,
that is everything.
[03:36.17]So if all you did today was breathe
and survive, I am totally proud of you.
[03:45.49]You’re not behind, you’re not lazy.
[03:49.97]You’re a human being carrying a lot.
[03:54.13]But guess what?
[03:55.93]You’re still there.
[03:58.49]So tomorrow, let’s talk about how this
heavy feeling is not your forever.
[04:05.65]But for today, just one small thing, okay?
[04:11.49]You got this, and I, I got you.
