This is the third episode of the miniseries, “Picking Things Back Up: From Setback to Comeback” in the Lynda: Rooted&Real podcast.
Following a period of grief, experiencing joy can often bring about feelings of guilt. In ‘Picking Things Back Up’ Part 3, the focus shifts to embracing those small moments of happiness that serve as reminders of your resilience and vitality.
It’s important to recognize that you have the right to feel light and to celebrate the little joys that life offers.
Allow yourself to reconnect with the world around you and cherish those fleeting moments of happiness. Picking things back up is not just about moving on; it’s about acknowledging that joy can coexist with sorrow.
Embrace the lightness and let it guide you forward.

[00:00:15.88]Hello, hello. This is Lynda again with Rooted&Real. ‘Karibuni sana’ (You’re all very welcome). So today what are we
[00:00:28.80]picking up? We’re picking up Small Joys. We picked up Peace and picked up Your
[00:00:36.100]Voice. So now we’re picking up small joys. Remember when you’re grieving, joy feels or
[00:00:46.48]felt guilty. Yeah? You’re like, “Why am I happy? My person is gone.” – “Why am I happy? And my
[00:00:55.29]project died.” – “Why am I happy and this and that…?” You know? So we’re still picking small
[00:01:02.24]joys anyway. Because healing doesn’t have to look big. You know, that bigness ‘ati’ (like)
[00:01:09.37]new job, yeah… new love life, new body. But healing also looks like, how do you put it?
[00:01:23.69]Like laughing at a meme. Oh, did they say meme or meme? They said meme. Somebody kept
[00:01:29.76]correcting me. Laughing at a meme, a hot shower, repeating a song, you know, even off key, the sun
[00:01:43.64]on your face. Small joys are not distractions from grief. You know what they are? They’re
[00:01:52.52]proof you’re still alive. So first things first, let’s make a ‘Joy List’. Tiny things, but
[00:02:03.67]things that bring you joy, things that matter to you. The smell of coffee, fresh sheets on the
[00:02:12.52]bed, even walking barefoot. Or like I said earlier, you can be singing off key in the
[00:02:18.60]bathroom or wherever it is. It is YOUR SPACE. It is YOUR JOY. Yeah. And that same joy…
[00:02:31.50]Some people might resent it because it’s showing YOUR HEALING. Don’t let them dull your light to make
[00:02:41.16]them comfortable. When you smile, don’t say, “I shouldn’t be happy yet.” Say, THANK YOU. So out
[00:02:52.37]with the naysayers, be you, feel you, and let the joy ring. And what people say is that joy is
[00:03:03.48]resistance. It is rebellion after pain. That you shouldn’t be this happy. But guess what? You still
[00:03:12.20]are. You are because you matter. So pick up those small joys like they’re your breadcrumbs back to
[00:03:20.85]yourself. You’re allowed to feel light again, by the way. So pick it up.
